Back to School in Saugus, CA: What to Know

If you have a kid at James Foster, Highlands, or any of the other schools scattered across Saugus, you already know this year's first bell rang back in mid-August. Jon and I hear school questions from nearly every family who calls us about a home in Saugus, whether they're looking in Central Park, Copper Hill, or Skyline Ranch. Santa Clarita's school-year timing, the two separate districts involved, and where families actually go for a library card or an after-school class trip people up, especially if they're moving here from somewhere else in Los Angeles. Here's what's actually true right now, in August 2026.

• Saugus Union School District (TK-6) started the 2026-2027 school year on August 12, 2026. The William S. Hart Union High School District (grades 7-12) started August 11, 2026.
• Central Park, Copper Hill, and Skyline Ranch are all covered by Saugus Union for TK-6 and by Hart District for grades 7-12. Exact school assignment still depends on your specific address.
• There is no Santa Clarita Public Library branch located inside Saugus. Families use the Canyon Country, Old Town Newhall, or Valencia branches, and one library card works at all three.
• City of Santa Clarita community centers in Newhall, Canyon Country, and Valencia run fall classes for kids and adults, with the full schedule published through the city's Seasons guide.

Saugus works differently than a lot of places new residents move from. Instead of one district covering kindergarten through twelfth grade, Saugus splits across two. Saugus Union School District handles transitional kindergarten through 6th grade, and it's the only district in town for that age range. The William S. Hart Union High School District picks up from 7th grade through 12th, including Saugus High School itself, which despite the name is a Hart District campus, not a Saugus Union one. That split holds true across Central Park, Copper Hill, and Skyline Ranch alike. Wherever your Saugus address sits among those three neighborhoods, the same two-district structure applies, even though the specific school names differ block to block.

According to Saugus Union School District's own published calendar, TK-6 students went back on August 12, 2026. The Hart District's calendar has its 7th through 12th graders starting a day earlier, August 11, 2026. So as of today, Saugus kids across Central Park, Copper Hill, and Skyline Ranch have all been back in their routines for a little over a week. If you're a Saugus family who just lived through the first-week scramble, that timing is why. If you're moving to Saugus later this year or next, mark both dates down separately since the two districts don't always match.

This is the question Jon and I get most, and it's also where we're careful not to guess. Central Park, Copper Hill, and Skyline Ranch each cover enough ground that the exact elementary, junior high, and high school tied to a given address can change from one street to the next, even within the same neighborhood. Rather than us naming specific boundaries that could be wrong for your exact lot, both districts publish official locator tools built for this. Saugus Union School District runs its "Locate Your School" tool, and the Hart District has its own SchoolSite Locator, both of which return a confirmed answer when you enter a street address. If you're house-hunting in Saugus and school assignment matters to your decision, that's the source to check before you write an offer, not a neighborhood name alone.

Here's something that surprises people who assume every Santa Clarita neighborhood has its own branch: there currently is no Santa Clarita Public Library location physically inside Saugus. Families across Central Park, Copper Hill, and Skyline Ranch use whichever of the city's three branches is closest to their daily routine, most often Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy, Old Town Newhall, or Valencia. The good news is a Santa Clarita Public Library card works at all three, so it's less about picking "your" branch and more about whichever one is on the way to school or work that day. Jon and I have watched Central Park's role as the community's civic hub keep growing over the years, something we wrote about in more detail after watching new families settle in around it each fall.

For students specifically, a library card unlocks HelpNow, the library's free live tutoring service, and Explora, its research database for school projects, both good to know about now that homework is back in the weekly routine. The Old Town Newhall and Valencia branches also have free study rooms parents can reserve for a couple of hours at a time, useful once group projects start showing up on the calendar.

The City of Santa Clarita runs its community centers the same way it runs the library system, citywide rather than neighborhood by neighborhood. The Newhall, Canyon Country, and Valencia community centers offer classes that range from swim lessons and youth dance to adult pickleball and fitness, and none of the three sit inside Central Park, Copper Hill, or Skyline Ranch. Families in all three Saugus neighborhoods drive to whichever center is closest, the same way they do for the library. The city publishes its full seasonal schedule, including registration windows, through its Seasons guide at SantaClarita.gov, which is worth a look now that fall programming is starting to post.
